Gramaphone (2003)

Director: Kamal
Writers: Kamal (writer)
Ikbal Kuttipuram (writer)
Music: Vidyasagar

Cast: Dileep, Meera Jasmine, Navya Nair, Revathi,
Jew Colony is a small place in Kochi where Sachidanandan (Dileep) lives, who owns an antique shop which sells Gramophone records. Luyi uncle (Oduvil Unnikrishnan), 'Saigal' Yousuf and 'Tabala' Bhaskaran (Salim Kumar) are Sachi's close friends.

There are also a couple of Jews like Gregory (Janardhanan), an old Jew and his daughter Sarah (Revathi) and granddaughter Jeniffer (Meera Jasmine). They are the last of the Jews to migrate to Israel. Gregory dreams of going to Israel someday.

Sachi's father Raveendran (Murali) was a great music director, who died leaving him a lot of debts. Naturally Sachi hates music and has vowed, never to sing, even in his bathroom. Sachi leads his life doing all sorts of jobs that he can get his hands at. Jennifer works as a housemaid at a big hotel and is the best friend of Sachi. First half is full of small comedies by Dileep and Meera. Just before second half enters Pooja (Navya Nair), who is the daughter of Arya Devi. Arya devi was a former student of Raveendran. Pooja and Jenny become best friends.

Gregory, who was looking for a way of returning to Israel finds an opportunity when an Israel soldier, returning from war asks for Jenny's hand in marriage. Gregory is delighted and readily agrees. Jennifer, who has a soft corner for Sachi, agrees for her family's happiness . Sachi is terribly upset as he also has a hidden place for Jenny, but does not express it.

You'll need lots of tissue papers for the second half, BUT there is an unexpected twist in the climax.

Meera, as usual, is strikingly beautiful and excels with her acting while Dileep is, as usual, at his best. I think the only mistake Kamal made was Navya. She is so boring in this movie, AS USUAL. This movie is good for watching, but Kamal could has made it a little more exquisite.

GETTING INTO THE ACT

She got some real attention when her movies ’’Kasthoorimaan’’ (state award winning performance) and ’’Swapnakoodu’’ did well in the box office, even if no magic was created. ’’Chakram’’, opposite to Prithviraj may be one movie she may want to forget. It was such a meaningless movie which drives the audience away.

The movie ’’Paadam Onnu Oru Vilaapam’’ won her not only the state award, but also the national award for the best actress. Unlike her previous movies, she managed to get a character role, and not a commercial one - her acting shows how badly she wanted a role like this.

Her role in the award winner was that of a young Muslim schoolgirl who is married to a man as his second wife. She gave her best performance ever and no wonder she won those awards.

AN ASSET TO THE INDUSTRY
With the simple, but beautiful looks and a huge amount of talent, she surely is an asset to the movie industry. In her latest movie ’’Achuvinte Amma’’, she has given a brilliant performance that stuns even the best actresses of the industry.

She has handled the character of Achu, the young and somewhat naughty girl with an extraordinary amount of ease that she seems to live in the character, instead of acting.

Another one of her memorable characters is Jennifer in the movie ’’Gramaphone’’. The true fact that I went for the movie because of her. It was a clear fact that Meera could keep her standards high and this movie was not at all an exception.

Even if Gramaphone was one of those good movies which didn’t fare well in the box office, her acting was talked about and the other actress in the movie Navya Nair seemed to have disappeared under the shade of Meera.

MEERA CONTINUED
One of Meera’s memorable performances comes in the movie ’’Perumazhakkalam’’, where her character, the desperate Muslim girl Razia is another feather to her career. She is the one who provides a certain amount of beauty to the movie.

It surely is a huge achievement to give us these great characters that stay in our minds in such a short interval of time and lets hope that she continues her fantastic run in the movie industry.

She had been in some controversy in the past involving Prithviraj and then her family, but everything seems to be back to normal and she is back with even better performances.

Entry to Film

Her entry into films was quite unexpected. She was introduced by Blessy who was working as an associate director in Malayalam Cinema. Her first movie Soothradharan did not do well at the box office. It was her Tamil debut Run (2002) a huge hit in Tamil Nadu directed by Lingusamy opposite Madhavan, that turned her luck for the better. Her subsequent films showcased her talent as an actress and soon established her as an actor to reckon with.

Meera has acted in the films of top Malayalam directors such as Lohithadas, Sathyan Anthikkad and Kamal. She got some real attention in movies like Kasthoorimann(2003) where she enacted both comedy and sentiments with equal fervor. And in Kamal's Swapnakoodu (2003) among the five main characters, one who scored the most was again Meera. The same year, her role in T.V. Chandran's Paadam Onnu: Oru Vilapam got her the National award for Best Actress. In Perumazhakkalam (2004) she gave a soul stirring performance as Raziya, definitely one of her best roles till date. In the movie Achuvinte Amma(2005), she has enacted the young, adorable character Achu, with extraordinary ease that she seemed to live the character, instead of acting. She paired with Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in Rasathanthram (2006) and with Mammootty in Ore Kadal (2007). She is getting rave reviews for her recent movie Calcutta News by Blessy

The success of Run made her a well-known star in Kollywood. She acted in a number of Tamil movies with popular actors, and then proceeded to work with director Mani Ratnam in the film Aayitha Ezhuthu. Her other notable films in Tamil are Lohitadas's Kasthuri Maan (2005), a remake of the Malayalam version,Sandakozhi(2005) completed within 200 days was a big hit as was S.S Stanleys Mercury Pookal(2006) where her down to earth role was very much appreciated. For Kasthuri Maan she won Best Actress (Special Award) from Tamil Nadu Government. She entered Telugu cinema in 2004 with Ammayi Bagundi and Gudumba Shankar. She also entered Kannada cinema in 2004 with the film Mourya, in which she co-starred with Puneet Rajkumar.

After making her entry into all four South Indian languages, she has acted concurrently in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu films. Her successful films include Achuvinte Amma, Bhadra, Rasathanthram, Vinodayathra, Araasu and Yamagola Malli Modalayindi.
